Letter about the Safer Schools App

The internet is a wonderful tool and has truly revolutionised the way we both teach and learn. Unfortunately, there we are real risks that we are exposed to when we go online. These range from technical threats, such as viruses and malware, to personal threats, such as identity theft and online predators.

Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself from these threats:

Install and maintain anti-malware software

-Keep the software up to date

-Do regular scans

-Scan new items BEFORE using them

Be aware of what information you are putting online

-How much info is publicly available on social media sites?

-Think about what else you use the information for - Is it a good idea to post your mothers maiden name in your facebook profile if it is also your banking password?

Think about who you are talking to

-Is the person who they say they are

-NEVER arrange to meet anyone you've met online without taking a friend/adult along

-Don't send personal details or photo's over the internet to someone you have never met

If you are concerned about online safety of either yourself or someone you know, there are some places you can go to get help, report something/someone and get some more information. The logos below link to sites that can help.

DITTO - online safety magazine for schools and parents

#DITTO is a free online safety (e-safety) magazine for schools, organizations and parents to keep you up to date with risks, issues, advice and guidance related to keeping children safe online, with a view to enjoying and learning about technology. A new edition is released approx. every 6 weeks.

If you’re a school or organization anywhere in the world that works with children, you can host the magazine on your own website (as long as there is a link back to this page), or you can print and send the magazine to your staff and parents or share via your social media channels.

The above is a link to a website initiated by the Government to help users secure their computers in a user  friendly way.

If you are unsure about your child's safety on the internet please follow the links below to some useful advice and guidance:
